Helpful Wireless APPs(applications)

Here is a brief list of applications that seem to be tried and true in the industry. For full details go to the website links based on app name.  *Usually there is a trial for all paid versions, as well as a home version with maybe limited features. This is basically to introduce you to a few and is by all means not a complete list.

Most Popular Wi-Fi Planning and Site Survey Apps (cost associated)
  1. Ekahau - (MAC/PC) Design, Optimization, and troubleshooting of a wireless network.
  2. NetSpot - (MAC/PC) - Wi-Fi troubleshooter and site survey
  3. TamoGraph (MAC/PC) - site survey and troubleshooting
  4. Acrylic -  (PC only) - site survey and troubleshooting
  5. VisiWave - (PC only) -site survey and troubleshooting
  6. Air-Magnet (PC only) - site survey and troubleshooting
Protocol Analyzers
  1. WireShark  (Free)- Most popular due to it being free and used to be called Ethereal.
  2. OmniPeek(LiveAction) (Paid)- Network troubleshooting and protocol analysis.
  3. Observer - (Paid) Network monitoring suite
  4. Fluke Networks LAN Meter -(Paid) They keep changing the name, but this one is proprietary and comes with certain products you buy from Fluke
  5. Kismet - (free) - endless uses sniffer, Wips, IDS, etc.
Misc.
  1. Iperf -(free) helps with measuring maximum achievable bandwidth within a network
  2. TCPTraceroute -(free) sends TCP packets in the form of a traceroute instead of ICMP
  3. NMap -(free) used for network discovery and security auditing 
  4. SmokePING -(free) Network Latency Tracker
  5. Revolution WiFi Capacity Planner - Helps with planning for AP counts based on specified client values
  6. WLAN Pros - Multiple Tools in Downloads - I happen to be apart of this great group of wireless individuals who promote great wireless networks no matter what vendor you use.
  7. WiFi Explorer (MAC) (Paid) -uses your devices adapters for wifi information and then arranges it to help with troubleshooting.
  8. WinFi(coming soon for PC similar to WiFi Explorer) -(Paid)  uses your devices adapters for wifi information and then arranges it to help with troubleshooting.
  9. AirTool (MAC) (Free) - gives more information on your wireless adapters and helps with packet captures
